Mon, 9 Jun 2008 16:09:55 EST http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=479 Games : Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=478 Disgaea has always been one of the more elaborate strategy role-playing games, but that's more a case of its combat mechanics than the look of the game. "Old school" would be an apt description when talking about the sprite-based characters and isometric backgrounds. So when it was announced this February that the third installment in the series, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, would be arriving on the behemoth hardware of the PlayStation 3, a few eyebrows were certainly raised. We recently got a chance to see how that transition is working out by taking a look at Disgaea 3 at a Nippon Ichi Software press event. While the retro look of the game remains in full effect, combat has been ratcheted up a considerable amount with what NIS jokingly calls "stupid hard levels." Mao (left) is one funny little demon, and so are the characters he encounters. Disgaea 3 features a new story with a familiar setting. You'll once again venture through the cutesy anime Netherworld, but this time you're setting forth from an academy rather than a castle. The main character this time around is named Mao. He's been diligently studying anime, comics, and video games for a solid three months, having come to the conclusion that he needs to defeat the Overlord to become a truly renowned hero. The problem is that his father is the Overlord. But no matter--Mao has accepted that he'll need to defeat his father to ascend to the status he seeks to inhabit. The demon academy Mao attends is an odd institution where honor students are the ones who constantly misbehave and delinquents are those who manage to arrive to class on time ready to learn. This twisted set of standards has deemed Mao a top honor student. It's also labeled Raspberyl, another student, as a delinquent. Raspberyl is one of the characters you'll encounter throughout the story. In addition, Mao enlists the help of his butler, Geoffrey, to help strip a lesser-known hero of his title so that Mao can skip all the initial growing pains and go straight on to conquering the Overlord. From there, it's the usual assortment of eccentric characters and absurd humor you've come to expect from a Disgaea game. One of the combat mechanics that has given the series a unique feel among strategy RPGs is the ability to stack characters on top of each other and toss them around the battlefield. You'll still be able to do this in Disgaea 3, but now, you've got a few more uses for your human totem pole. You'll be able to use what are called tower attacks to go after enemies in a variety of ways. We were shown a clip of a tower acting as a 10-person cartwheel to roll over and do damage to those caught in its path. There was also a moment with one person grabbing the entire tower and swinging it around, as well as several bizarre chain reactions where characters are shot from the tower like bullets from a loaded magazine. Another new feature is the skill merge, which takes skills you've acquired throughout your various battles and fuses them together to achieve hybrid results. You can also use an ability called magichange to transform your character midbattle. A few other enhancements include the ability to deal damage up to a million points at a time and a class world that gives you access to 40 randomly generated battle stages per character. With 270 characters in the game, that should add up to quite a bit of space. Beyond these, one of the bigger features added to the battle system is the idea of geo blocks. These introduce a puzzle element to the fights. They're multicolored blocks that can be stacked and arranged on the battlefield, which can then be taken out in chain attacks to achieve all manner of strange results. We're not yet sure about the specifics of the geo block placement (how much of it is done by the player and so on), but suffice it to say, they should take an already deep battle system and make it even more extravagant. Tower attacks get to be pretty crazy. Visually, Disgaea 3 is a bit of an odd duck. The backgrounds have been improved immensely with much sharper textures, but the character sprites still look just as they did before. This creates an odd contrast between the clear backdrops and relatively blurry characters. But with the radiant battle effects, dramatic transformations, and colorful attack animations that occur throughout the course of combat, it would be hard to classify the look as being overly simplistic. We're looking forward to getting another chance to play Disgaea 3 because there have been far more tweaks and additions made than we've been able to mention here. Until that time comes, you can mark your calendar for an August 26 release. Mon, 9 Jun 2008 16:09:10 EST http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=478 Games : Necrovision Hands-On http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=477 The upcoming first-person shooter, Necrovision, combines World War I, vampires, and demonic powers. At least no one can ever accuse developer The Farm 51 of not being original. At 1C Company's annual press event this week, we took a few minutes to step into the combat boots of a young American soldier, volunteering to join the British army for the adventure of a lifetime. And boy, did he find it. Soon after storming German bunkers and clearing out trenches while avoiding poisonous clouds of mustard gas, our hero witnessed a giant flaming skull floating in the sky. Similar in appearance to Lord Voldemort's dark mark in the Harry Potter films, the skull told us that our life is forfeit and our soul belongs to demons--or something to that effect. Soon, we were attacked by a fiery demon that hurled fireballs at us. Naturally, we shot our Lugar pistol at this supernatural monster and defeated it. It must be said, those Germans sure did know how to make a good Lugar. This is not your great grandfather's World War I. That ended our hands-on time with the game, but we did manage to pick up a few additional story elements. After defeating the Kaiser's wily band of Germans, our hero descends into the underworld where he must do battle against vampires. Only then, does he discover that it is the demons and their forces of darkness that are the true threat to human and vampirekind alike. Our hero discovers a demonic power glove and, naturally, assumes the powers of the demons and utilizes vampire technology to save the world. Convoluted storyline aside, we did enjoy thrusting our bayonet into hoards of Germans. Along with the Lugar and traditional rifles, we used stick grenades and our firsts to pound through the Kaiser's forces. Later on, you'll unlock magical attack spells, do battle against large bosses, and solve simple puzzles. In one such puzzle, we were cut off from our friends by a malfunctioning electrical panel. We threw a grenade at it, the panel blew up, and we moved on. If you're looking for something different later this year, you'll surely find it in Necrovision. Mon, 9 Jun 2008 16:08:02 EST http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=477 Games : Captain Blood Hands-On http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=476 In the novel by author Rafael Sabatini, Captain Blood is actually Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish doctor who was sentenced to death for tending to several rebels wounded in battle. Although Blood was not actually part of the rebellion itself, he was nonetheless convicted of treason against the king. Instead of facing the noose, the king sends Blood and several other prisoners to the Caribbean where they were to be sold as slaves, but Blood escapes and goes on to become one of the most feared pirates in (literary) history. Later this year, there will be Blood. In the upcoming game by developer SeaWolf, Captain Blood is a pirate who repeatedly hacks and slashes British soldiers, Spanish soldiers, and other pirates in a traditional, 3D button masher. We briefly got our hands on the hand-to-hand combat in Captain Blood at publisher 1C's press event this week. The controls are simple: There are two attack buttons, a block button, a grapple button, and even a one-shot-one-kill pistol attack. By combining the attack buttons, you'll unleash a variety of deadly combos. Our favorite was when we knocked over an enemy, jumped on his chest, repeatedly punched him in the face, and then stabbed him in the heart with a sword--ouch. You'll also earn experience points and be able to unlock longer, more complicated and more powerful combos to use later. The pistol proved a little unwieldy. There is no auto-targeting system, so you'll have to hope that your gun is facing an enemy when you decide to pull the trigger. You have unlimited ammo, but it takes about 20 seconds for your one-shot pistol to reload. Grappling can only be performed when a grappling icon appears on screen, so combat isn't nearly as dynamic as in such action games as Ninja Gaiden 2. Still, you can unleash an additional set of devastating combos and finishers when the icon actually does appear. In our time with Captain Blood, we ran through a harbor front and swashbuckled our way through crowds of enemy soldiers armed with sabers longer than their own bodies. Our computer-controlled trusty sidekick Pitt accompanied us on the battlefield, which was impressively packed with a large number of enemies onscreen at one time. Send your enemies to the deep with well-timed cannon fire. We don't yet know how much, if any, exploration is included in Captain Blood, but there will be plenty of ship battles on the high seas to keep your attention. Wind and maneuvering skill will be significant factors as you attempt to send your enemies into the abyss for eternity. Speaking of eternity, Captain Blood has been in development for several years now, but 1C tells us you can expect to walk the plank on both the Xbox 360 and PC later this year. Mon, 9 Jun 2008 16:05:53 EST http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=476 Games : Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason http://adshawk.com/classifieds/detail.php?id=475 Icebreakers are not known for their comfort. With their hulls designed to crush through seasonal ice to keep important trade routes open, icebreakers are constantly lurching and known to roll even in moderate swells. As if that wasn't uncomfortable enough, developer Action Forms has added dead bodies and abominable snowmen to the North Wind, the nuclear-powered icebreaker that serves as the setting for the upcoming Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. I see dead people. It's 1968 and the North Wind is trapped in the ice near the Soviet arctic station Pole 21. Meteorologist Alexander Nesterov is stranded on the ship--how he got there, we have no idea. Along with his standard talent as a meteorologist for predicting the weather in the Arctic (100 percent chance of cold), Nesterov is also able to sense the memories of the dead. And of the dead, there are plenty--12 crew members have died on board the North Wind, and Nesterov is in a unique position to enter their memories to set things right. When Nesterov approaches one of the dead crew, he triggers a mental echo--a flashback of the final moments of the crewman's life. We saw one crewman who had an unfortunate fight with a shipping crane and, well, the crane won. During the mental echo, Nesterov sprinted to the crane control to move the deadly hook away from the crewman. You don't actually go back to save his life, but the spirit is sufficiently moved by your actions in the mental echo to help you solve the mystery onboard the North Wind and, then, go on to rest in peace. Resources are scarce on the North Wind. We found a rifle and a few rounds of ammunition, but mostly, we had to rely on an ice axe or our mitts to fend off the creatures that inhabit the ship. Somehow, the North Wind has become infested with monsters--monsters that don't like you. One giant mummy creature tried to off us with an axe of his own, and later, another ice monster hurled blocks of ice at us. In order to survive, you'll have to stay warm. There are pockets of heat scattered throughout the North Wind, from steam pipes to smoldering fires, which can be used to stabilize your body heat, displayed in the lower right corner of the screen. If you lose enough body heat, you won't even be able to perform the simplest of tasks. We futilely tried to open a door for five minutes before a developer kindly walked over and explained the body heat system. He must work out. Set in such a creepy atmosphere--a blend of The Thing, The Sixth Sense, and BioShock-- Cryostasis is poised to offer plenty of scares when it's released in 2009. We suggest you bundle up.
